How to source non-GM animal feed
|
Option A: grow your own
The most sustainable and environmentally-sound option for farmers is to grow your own non-GM animal feed. Benefits include knowing exactly what you are growing, reducing your dependency on foreign imports, reduction of food miles and cutting the growing transport costs due to peak oil.
Former IFA Deputy President Ruaidhri Deasy and former ICSA Rural Development Chairman John Heney estimated that Ireland can maintain its current level of animal feed consumption from local production. Home-grown sources of non-GM animal feed include rolled oats, barley, lupins and crushed rapeseed.
Example: Mullingar-based TLT International (annual turnover € 15 million), currently exports some 1,200 to 1,500 non-GM fed store cattle a month to their prime Italian market. These cattle are fed on grass and from silage made from barley grown on their own farm.

Option B: buy non-GM feed from a reputable source
Please let us know of any non-GM animal feed suppliers in Ireland or Northern Ireland by sending an email to us at feed@gmfreeireland.org.
