GM Crops? Coexistence and Liability
GM-free Ireland recommends that all Irish farming organisations North and South of the border obtain their copy of the excellent 160 page report entitled GM Crops? Coexistence and Liability by the UK Environment and Agriculture Biotechnology Commission (AEBC), published by the UK Department of Trade and Industry in November 2003 (see details left).
Following a recent meeting in Belfast which was attended by delegates from the Irish Department of Agriculture and the Department of Food Safety two members of the AEBC contacted GM-free Ireland on 19 December 2003 to warn us that they were "not impressed" by the Irish government's guidelines for the coexistence of GM and non-GM crops.
Problems include the lack of statutory rules regarding contamination, the costs of preventing contamination, the costs of dealing with financial losses, and proper compensation / liability provisions.
